Rug Care Guide

Rug Care Guide

Rugs are the ideal way to protect your existing carpet within high traffic areas, and are also commonly used to brighten up flooring. Whether your rug is a central focal point of your living space, or simply a method of protection within a busy hallway in your home, it is important that they look as good as new for as long as possible.

Generally, rugs are very easy to look after, it is only their material and type of pile that will affect the methods you should employ when cleaning and caring for them.
Follow these rug care tips to ensure that each rug throughout your home is kept neat, clean and damage free.

Choosing the right rug for your home
Rugs can be used for all sorts of purposes, so it is important to find one that suits your needs and your home best.

I have pets, should I avoid rugs altogether?
For those living with pets, it would not be advisable to purchase a loop pile rug as these can be easily damaged by sharp claws, instead we would recommend a cut pile rug that offers just as much comfort, with a reduced likelihood of being damaged.

Cleaning your rug
Rugs need to be cleaned regularly in order to maintain their condition and avoid damage over time. They can be cleaned in the same way as standard flooring types such as carpet. For loose debris and dust, a simple vacuum will do the trick, or for surface stains, a carpet shampoo will work wonders.

How often does a rug need to be cleaned?
As with all flooring types, rugs need to be cleaned regularly in order to maintain their appearance and to remain hygienic. Vacuuming is recommended to take place a minimum of once per week, lightly coloured rugs in particular may need more cleaning attention.

What is the best method of removing stains from a rug?
Prevention is always better that cure, therefore to avoid staining be sure to attend spillages as soon as they occur. To avoid a stain, blot the affected area with a damp, clean cloth to remove all moisture.

We understand that some spillages may go unnoticed, and as a result not all stains are avoidable. So what should you do if you do find that your rug has become stained? Firstly, ensure that you have a good carpet shampoo to hand. Always be sure to follow the instructions as stated on the label and before you begin cleaning, test the product on a small area of the rug to ensure it will not cause damage.

For stains that are unable to be removed using standard carpet shampoo, it may be worthwhile calling in the professionals. Professional carpet and rug cleaners will provide the care and skills needed to bring your rug back to life and have it looking as good as new in no time.
