Is too much sleep bad for you?

Is too much sleep bad for you?

Keele University in Newcastle has led a global study to discover if sleeping more than 8 hours a night could affect people’s health or increase the risk of heart disease. The university researchers conducted 74 studies and found that oversleeping leads to poor physical and mental health.

Achieving a good night’s sleep not only improves your mood and leaves you feeling more ready for the day, it’s key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Dr Chun Shing Kwok, a researcher at Keele University Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine states, “Our study has an important public health impact in that it shows that excessive sleep is a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk. Our findings have important implications as clinicians should have greater consideration for exploring sleep duration and quality during consultations. If excessive sleep patterns are found, particularly prolonged durations of eight hours or more, then clinicians should consider screening for adverse cardiovascular risk factors and obstructive sleep apnoea, which is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep.”

How to achieve a healthier sleep routine

Do you find it difficult to get the right amount of sleep? Read our tips below!

Have a comfortable bed

Regardless of whether you’re getting too much or too little sleep you deserve a comfortable and supportive mattress. If you can’t remember the last time you bought a new bed or mattress maybe it’s time for a replacement! We have lots of different options of memory foam mattresses, to adjustable beds to perfectly suit your sleeping needs. Browse our mattress range here.

Set alarms

Although it may be tempting to ditch the alarm on your days off, make sure to set an alarm to ensure you get a standard 8 hours of sleep. If you struggle to wake up, a helpful tip is to set an alarm out of your arm's reach, so then you have to get out of bed to turn it off, and therefore feel more awake!
