How to choose the perfect rug size for your room

How to choose the perfect rug size for your room

Knowing exactly how big your rug needs to be in order to best fit your living room or bedroom can be a challenge. We hope this helpful guide will help you choose correctly.

Once you’ve browsed the market and found the perfect rug to suit your room, it’s time to think about size. Choosing the right rug size is incredibly important and can make or break the overall appearance of your room; a rug that is too small will look lost and not give much of an impact, whilst one that’s too big will make the space feel small and overcrowded.

Guesswork can only get you so far, so we’ve put together this handy rug sizing guide to help you choose the perfect sized rug for your living room and bedroom.

Rug sizes for living rooms

All legs on

This placement can look super effective in large living rooms with furniture floating in the centre. Invest in a rug that is large enough to fit all legs of your furniture on top, with enough room for a margin of at least a couple of inches on each side.

Front legs on

If your living room is slightly smaller with furniture pressed against the wall, going for a smaller rug that can be much more effective. In this case, ensure that only the front legs of your furniture cover the rug.

Coffee table only

Another great rug placement is to centre it under your coffee table, leave margins on each side for maximum impact.

Rug sizes for bedrooms

Frame the bed

Consider investing in a rug that is large enough to fit your bed and nightstands on. An 8’ x 10’ rug is usually the perfect size to accommodate a king- or queen-sized bed with nightstands.

Flank the bed

Another way to utilise rugs is to place two identical runners on each side of the bed. This will give you the same soft underfoot feel when you get in and out of bed, for a fraction of the price of a large carpet. Runners are also easier to place too, as you won’t need to move your bed to place them.

Use tape to mark out a size estimate

Before you invest in a new rug, it’s a good idea to mark out on your floor with tape the approximate size and position you want it to go. Simply mark out the borders and see for yourself if it looks right – keep it there for a few days to get a better idea.
