5 methods to prolong the life of your carpet

5 methods to prolong the life of your carpet

Follow these tips to keep your carpets looking new for as long as possible!

Buying a carpet for your home is one of the biggest interior investments you are likely to make, therefore it is crucial to make sure it stays in good condition for as long as possible. Whilst even the most thick, high quality carpets will begin to show wear and tear over time, there are a variety of actions you can take to delay that process. Follow these tips to keep your carpets looking new for as long as possible!

Clean Spillages immediately

A small drop of water or any other light coloured drink may seem like a harmless edition that will dry in no time. However, whilst the liquid itself may not leave a stair, the moisture will attract bacteria that could potentially leave you with a nasty mark and a ruined carpet. No matter how big or small, attend to spillages immediately by blotting gently with a dry sponge to transport the spillage from your carpet, to the sponge.

Vacuum frequently

Vacuuming your home a minimum of twice a week will keep your carpets dust free and ensure that each fibre remains plumped up and in its rightful position. If you leave dust on your carpets for a prolonged period, it is likely to fade the colour of your flooring, and in the long term the friction of the dust particles may damage each individual fibre of the carpet, leaving you with irreversible damage.

Keep your curtains closed

Whilst the sun shining through your window may first appear as a welcome treat, those warm rays could damage your carpets and result in faded colour. To avoid this and keep your carpets looking vibrant and fresh, close your curtains when you leave the house on sunny days.

Door mats and rugs

Keep outside dust and dirt off of your carpets by placing a door mat on both sides of your front and back door. This will ensure double protection against dirty shoes and the dirt they may potentially carry into your home. Similarly, placing a matt in the 'heavy traffic' areas of your home, such as a hallway, will reduce signs of wear and keep your carpet fibres intact. .

Steam clean

Steam clean your carpets at least once a year to remove all dirt and ensure that it doesn't become ingrained or damage the fibres or taint their colour. Steam cleaning your carpets will also help to reduce and destroy harmful bacteria that could otherwise damage your carpets.
